The African Union has held important consultations in Kigali, Rwanda to find peace in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where fighting continues.

The talks happened on October 6, 2026, and focused on implementing the Washington Peace Agreement, security arrangements, disarmament and reintegration of fighters, refugee protection, and regional economic cooperation.

The AU delegation included three former presidents: former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde, former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, and former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Eastern DRC has been in crisis for months with M23 rebels and other groups fighting. Despite many diplomatic efforts, people are still being killed and forced to leave their homes.

The AU said the Kigali meeting is part of efforts to make sure the peace agreement is not just on paper but actually implemented on the ground.

Many Africans are watching to see if this Kigali talk will finally bring lasting peace to the Great Lakes region. For now, the people of Goma and surrounding areas are still waiting for real peace.
