Real Cost of Campus Life in Kenya 2026: My Maseno University Breakdown

Campus life in Kenya is expensive if you don’t plan. I’m studying in Maseno and here’s my real monthly budget for 2026. This will help new students budget.

Rent and Accommodation

Most students in Maseno stay in hostels outside campus. A single room with electricity costs Ksh 5,000 to Ksh 15,500 per month. Cheaper shared rooms are Ksh 4,500. Campus hostels are Ksh 9,000+ per semester but space is limited. I pay Ksh 6,500 for a room near Maseno town. Water is extra Ksh 200 per month.

Food and Daily Expenses

Eating at kibandas costs Ksh 150 to Ksh 300 per day. Chapo beans is Ksh 90. Ugali matumbo is Ksh 120. Cooking saves money. A gas refill is Ksh 1,600 and lasts 2 months. I budget Ksh 10,000 per month for food. Buying from the market in Luanda on weekends is cheaper than Maseno shops.

Transport and Airtime

Boda from Maseno to Kisumu is Ksh 150. Matatu is Ksh 100. Most days I walk to save money. Monthly airtime + data is Ksh 1,000. Safaricom Blaze bundles work best for students.

Total Monthly Cost

My basic total is Ksh 11,700: Rent 3,500 + Food 6,000 + Water 200 + Airtime 1,000 + Misc 1,000. This doesn’t include school fees or HELB delays.

How Students Actually Make Money

HELB is Ksh 37,000 per year but comes late. Many students fall for “$5 survey” ads like MetroOpinion. I tried it and made only Ksh 38 in a week. You need 84 surveys for Ksh 1,943 payout. That is 29 hours of work for less than Ksh 70 per hour.

What works better: Writing on LodPost pays Ksh 300 to 650 per article. Two articles equal Ksh 600+ and withdraws to M-Pesa at only $10 minimum. Transcription on Remotasks pays Ksh 200 to 400 per hour. Selling mandazi or printing assignments also pays Ksh 200+ daily.

My Advice for First Years

Budget Ksh 12,000 per month minimum. Cook instead of buying all meals. Use HELB for fees only. For side hustles, avoid surveys. One LodPost article pays more than 50 surveys and money comes to M-Pesa directly.

Campus is hard but doable if you avoid time-wasters
