A 23-year-old female model went missing after meeting a man, only to be found two weeks later in a deserted forest: the killer wore an elite mask.

On the morning of June 18, 2022, police in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, received a report that two campers had discovered a woman's body deep in the forest. The scene was located in a remote wooded area surrounded by dense weeds, and police immediately cordoned off the area upon arrival.

The body contained no identification or personal belongings, and its appearance was visibly decomposed, with suspicious ligature marks on the neck. Unable to initially identify the body, police sent it to the forensic department and released the victim's characteristics: approximately 23 years old, with a prominent mole on her face and distinctive teeth.

After the news was released, members of the public quickly provided clues, believing the victim's characteristics closely matched those of an adult video model, Rina Niino. Police contacted her family and learned that Niino had gone missing after leaving home on June 5th, and her family had reported her missing on June 8th. DNA testing confirmed the deceased was 23-year-old Rina Niino.

The forensic report indicated a severe fracture of Niino's hyoid bone, a condition typically indicating strong external force to the neck, leading to the determination of strangulation as the cause of death. Based on the condition of the body, it was estimated that she died approximately two weeks prior, coinciding with the time she went missing.

Police then reviewed CCTV footage after she left home, finding crucial footage near the north exit of JR Mito Station. Around 10:00 AM on June 5th, Niino got into a man's car; this was her last appearance on public surveillance footage.

Through license plate information, police identified the car owner as 33-year-old salaryman Hironobu Sanpei. He owned a villa in Hitachi-Omiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, not far from the forest where the body was found.

On June 14th, police arrested Sanpei at his villa, initially on suspicion of kidnapping. During questioning, Sanpei admitted to meeting Rina Shinno, but claimed they were only working together on a film shoot. He said he had taken her to a nearby shop afterward and had no idea where she went afterward.

However, police quickly discovered numerous inconsistencies in his account.

During a search of the villa, police found a bed, handcuffs, and suspicious marks on the mattress in the basement. They also found numerous photos and videos of Shinno, some of which involved high-risk filming. Police also found her hair, personal belongings, and biological evidence in the basement, proving she had stayed at the villa for some time that day.

Crucially, Sanpei Hironobu's driving records showed that on June 5th, his car drove from Mito Station to the villa, and then repeatedly traveled between the villa and the vicinity of the forest. This route highly overlapped with the time and location of the crime, significantly increasing suspicion that he had moved the body.

Police also visited the shop Sanpei claimed he "took her to," but shop owners and nearby residents stated they had not seen Shinno that day, and the shop's security cameras did not capture her image. Sanpei's testimony was thus gradually overturned.

Rina Niino was born in 1999 into a well-off middle-class family in Tokyo, the youngest of three sisters. Her father worked for a foreign pharmaceutical company, her mother was strikingly beautiful, and all three daughters were pretty and charming from a young age. The Niino family was known in the neighbors as gentle, polite, and well-liked.

As a child, Rina Niino was considered an outstanding girl. She was somewhat shy but friendly, excelling academically and athletically, even representing her school in relay races. Her biggest childhood dream was to become a doctor and save lives.

After graduating from elementary school, she entered a prestigious private girls' school in Tokyo, and her life seemed destined for success. However, after graduation, instead of attending a regular university, she entered a medical-related vocational school, only to drop out, ending her dream of becoming a doctor.

After leaving school, Rina Niino's life took a sharp turn. She initially worked in Tokyo nightclubs before entering the adult entertainment industry. Her striking appearance and charming personality quickly garnered her a loyal following. She then transitioned to adult video production, becoming an independent model, promoting her work and cultivating a fan community through social media, while also seeking collaborations online.

It was this online interaction that caught the eye of Hironobu Mihira.

Born in 1988 into a wealthy family—his father was an engineer at a large corporation—Mihira spent many years in the United States during his childhood due to his father's work. Fluent in English, he quickly integrated into his peers upon returning to Japan. Later, he returned to the US for university. Leveraging his language skills and experience, he rose rapidly through the ranks, earning a high salary and appearing as a typical elite office worker.

He was also married and lived with his wife in a villa in Ibaraki Prefecture. Neighbors initially believed they had a loving relationship and were an enviable couple. However, shortly after their marriage, his wife chose to divorce him after discovering Mihira's history of violence.

Between 2016 and 2017, Hironobu Sanpei was arrested three times, for offenses including assaulting police officers and physically assaulting a stranger on the street. Although the offenses were serious, his family reportedly paid a large settlement, preventing him from facing severe legal consequences. After his divorce, he changed jobs, concealing his past, and successfully landed a managerial position at a large corporation.

On the surface, he was a high-earning, English-speaking, and successful professional; privately, however, he regularly used the internet to find subjects for his photography, satisfying his peculiar desires.

In March 2022, Sanpei contacted Rina Shinno, posing as a fan, behaving politely and harmlessly, gradually gaining her trust. After their first meeting, their relationship seemed to continue. On June 5th, he again invited Shinno out, ostensibly to discuss a photography collaboration.

That day, Shinno told her family she was just going out to meet an acquaintance and would return home that evening. She dressed up carefully and left, but never returned.

On June 6th and 7th, she remained missing and unreachable by phone. Her family inquired with friends and colleagues, but no one knew where she had gone. On June 8th, the family officially reported her missing to the police. Following the trail, the police found that she had last gotten into Sanpei's car, then gradually located the secluded villa, eventually discovering her body in a nearby forest.

Sanpei consistently maintained that the filming was consensual and that Rina Shinno's death was merely an accident. However, the court did not accept this claim.

The evidence presented by the police included surveillance footage, dashcam footage, physical evidence from the villa, digital forensic data from her mobile phone, restored deleted images, an autopsy report, and testimonies from multiple witnesses. This evidence corroborated each other, pointing directly to Hironobu Sanpei.

On June 14, 2022, police first arrested him on suspicion of kidnapping; on June 24, they arrested him again on suspicion of abandoning a body; and on September 9th of the same year, based on a complete chain of evidence, police arrested Hironobu Sanpei for the third time on suspicion of murder. The case was subsequently transferred to the prosecution, where he was formally charged with murder and abandonment of a corpse.

On March 10, 2026, the Tokyo District Court delivered its first-instance verdict. The court determined that although some details and motives of the crime remained unclear, the existing evidence was sufficient to prove that Hironobu Mihira murdered Rina Niino and subsequently moved and abandoned her body. Ultimately, the court sentenced Mihira to 20 years in prison.

This case shocked Japanese society not only because a 23-year-old girl's life was brutally taken, but also because it exposed many real-world problems.

As an independent adult video model, Rina Niino sought partners through social media, without the protection of an agency or a robust safety mechanism. When potential partners deliberately disguised or concealed their violent past, she had virtually no way to verify their background beforehand.

Meanwhile, Mihira had repeatedly assaulted unfamiliar women in the past, but due to reconciliation and systemic loopholes, he did not receive sufficient punishment, allowing his violent tendencies to escalate and ultimately leading to an irreparable tragedy.

What's even more distressing is that, after the incident, some public opinion didn't focus on the perpetrator or systemic issues, but instead examined the victim's profession and choices. However, no matter what a person does, it should never be a reason for them to be harmed. Every life should be respected and protected by law.

The tragedy of Rina Niino reminds us that what's truly terrifying isn't just what happened in that remote villa, but the malice of some people, often hidden beneath a glamorous, respectable, and seemingly normal exterior.
