On July 28, 1945, a B-25 Mitchell crashed into the Empire State Building during heavy fog, causing destruction, fire, and loss of life. Among those caught in the disaster was Betty Lou Oliver, a young elevator operator who was severely injured in the explosion. While being evacuated, the elevator she was placed in plunged 75 floors after its cables snapped.
