Women in the Benin Kingdom played vital roles in politics, spirituality, commerce, and diplomacy. The most prominent female position was the Iyoba (Queen Mother), first established in the 16th century for Queen Idia, whose wisdom and military support secured her son Oba Esigie’s throne. The Iyoba wielded significant influence, managing her own palace and council. Women also served as priestesses, traders, and cultural custodians. They led market trade in beads, textiles, and food, while female spiritual leaders performed rituals to maintain peace and prosperity. Royal women often acted as mediators in political disputes and alliances. Their achievements were immortalized in ivory carvings and bronze plaques, portraying them as powerful and respected figures. The legacy of these women remains an enduring symbol of leadership, resilience, and the central role of women in African history.

Introduction: The Echoes in Our Mind We often imagine ourselves as modern beings—plugged into technology, driven by innovation, and defined by contemporary values. But beneath the surface of our hyperconnected world lies something older, quieter, and far more powerful: the mind shaped by history. Philosophy and psychology, two of the oldest inquiries into human nature, are not relics of the past. They are mirrors through which we’ve always tried to understand ourselves. From Plato’s cave to Freud’s couch, from ancient African wisdom to modern cognitive science, the pursuit of the human soul—its questions, instincts, and contradictions—has never truly ended. In fact, to understand who we are today, we must listen to the philosophical and psychological whispers of the past.
