Why You Always Feel Tired Even After Sleeping: 6 Hidden Reasons

Have you ever slept for 7 or 8 hours and still woke up feeling tired, weak, and lazy? You are not alone. Many Nigerians experience this every morning. You sleep at night but by morning you feel like you did not sleep at all.

If you always feel tired even after sleeping, your body is trying to tell you something. Here are 6 hidden reasons why and what you can do.

1. You Are Sleeping, But Not Getting Quality Sleep

Sleep is not just about hours. Quality matters more than quantity. If you sleep for 8 hours but you keep pressing your phone, watching TikTok till 2am, and sleeping with light on, your brain does not rest well.

Many people in Nigeria sleep with their data on, phone brightness high, and noisy generator sound. This disturbs deep sleep. Your body sleeps but your brain stays active.

What to do: Turn off your phone 30 minutes before sleep. Sleep in a dark and quiet room. Avoid pressing phone in bed.

2. You Are Dehydrated

One of the most common reasons for morning tiredness is lack of water. When you sleep, you lose water through breathing and sweating, especially in hot weather like Lagos.

If you wake up and you don't drink water till afternoon, your body becomes dehydrated. Dehydration causes headache, tiredness, and lack of focus.

What to do: Keep a bottle of water beside your bed. Drink one glass immediately after you wake up. During the day, drink at least 8 glasses of water.

3. You Eat Heavy Food Late At Night

Do you like eating heavy food like swallow, rice, or noodles by 10pm? This is a major reason why you wake up tired.

When you eat late, your body spends all night trying to digest the food instead of resting. By morning, you feel heavy, tired, and sometimes with stomach pain.

What to do: Eat your dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime. If you must eat late, eat light food like fruits, pap, or small portion.

4. Stress, Anxiety and Overthinking

This one affects many young Nigerians. You are in bed but your mind is not sleeping. You are thinking about school fees, job, relationship, family problems, and bills.

When you overthink at night, your body produces stress hormones that prevent deep sleep. Even if you sleep, you wake up feeling mentally tired.

What to do: Before sleeping, write down your worries in a book. Pray or meditate for 5 minutes. Avoid reading sad news or having serious arguments before bed.

5. Lack of Vitamins and Too Much Caffeine

Low vitamin D, vitamin B12, and iron deficiency can make you feel tired every day, even if you sleep well. Many people who stay indoors and don't eat balanced diet suffer from this.

Also, if you drink too much coffee, energy drink like Fearless or Predator, or Coke, it will disturb your sleep cycle. Caffeine keeps you awake at night and makes you crash in the morning.

What to do: Eat more fruits, vegetables, eggs, and beans. Go out in morning sun for 15 minutes. Reduce energy drinks and drink coffee only in the morning.

6. Your Sleep Time Is Not Consistent

Some days you sleep by 10pm, other days you sleep by 3am. This confuses your body clock. When your sleep time is not consistent, your body does not know when to rest and when to wake up.

This is why you feel tired even after sleeping long on weekends.

What to do: Try to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. If you sleep by 11pm, wake up by 6am daily. Your body will adjust and you will feel more energetic.

Final Words

Feeling tired after sleeping is not normal. It is a sign that something in your lifestyle needs to change. You don't need drugs to feel better. Start with small changes: drink more water, eat early, reduce phone time at night, and manage stress.

If you tried all these for 2 weeks and you still feel extremely tired every day, please visit a hospital to check your health. It could be signs of malaria, typhoid, or other medical issues common in Nigeria.

Your sleep should give you energy, not take it away. Fix your habits and wake up feeling fresh again.
