Super Eagles and Galatasaray forward Victor James Osimhen is expected to miss Nigeria's upcoming AFCON qualifiers following a knee injury that will require surgery. This is a huge blow to the Super Eagles, who currently sit second on the qualifying table with three points from two matches. Osimhen had already missed Nigeria's previous national team call-up after sustaining a groin injury while playing for Galatasaray. His latest injury raises fresh concerns about Nigeria's attacking options, particularly given the team's struggles in matches without their star striker.

The Super Eagles have struggled to maintain consistency in Osimhen's absence. Nigeria also failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During the qualifiers, Osimhen missed some matches through injury. Despite returning to score several important goals, including a hat-trick against Benin Republic, which helped Nigeria secure a place in the playoffs, the Super Eagles eventually suffered defeat against DR Congo. Osimhen had also come off with a hamstring injury during that playoff encounter.

What Happened to Victor Osimhen?

Galatasaray communicated Osimhen's latest medical situation through a statement published on the club's official X account.According to the statement, following a strain sustained during Galatasaray's UEFA Champions League victory over VfB Stuttgart, medical examinations revealed a loose fragment in his left knee. The club subsequently announced that arthroscopic knee surgery would be performed by club doctor Yener İnce at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital.

Osimhen was consequently withdrawn from Galatasaray's squad for their match against Amedspor in the Turkish Süper Lig.However, reports from Turkish journalists Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, Kaya Temel and Erdem Arkıgöz suggest that the injury is not particularly serious, with the Nigerian striker expected to spend approximately two to three weeks on the sidelines. This recovery estimate would include the upcoming international break.

Nevertheless, his absence presents another challenge for the Super Eagles. Although the team has shown some improvement under Eric Chelle, navigating the international window without their main attacking threat will be a significant test.

Galatasaray Fans Blame Rams Park Pitch

Meanwhile, Galatasaray have faced criticism from sections of their fanbase over the condition of the playing surface at Rams Park, with some supporters suggesting that the poor pitch may have contributed to Osimhen's injury.A video circulating on social media from the Stuttgart encounter showed Barış Alper Yılmaz slipping on the pitch before Osimhen, who was advancing towards goal, also lost his footing and fell.

Following the incident, Osimhen appeared visibly frustrated and gestured towards the pitch in the direction of the Galatasaray bench.

Some supporters believe he may have sustained the injury during that incident. However, there is currently no confirmed medical report establishing a direct connection, particularly as the striker continued playing afterwards.Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk and defender Ismail Jakobs have also expressed concerns about the playing surface, with complaints about how its condition has affected their performance and made playing their respective positions more difficult.

The situation has further fuelled criticism of the club's management, with some supporters calling for resignations over what they consider negligence and inadequate pitch maintenance that could put players at risk of injury.

The Challenge Ahead for the Super Eagles

With Osimhen facing a spell on the sidelines, the Super Eagles must now find a way to cope without their leading striker. His goals, physical presence and ability to create opportunities make him an important part of Nigeria's attacking setup.

While other forwards will have an opportunity to step up, replacing Osimhen's influence will not be an easy task. For Eric Chelle and his players, the upcoming international fixtures will provide another opportunity to demonstrate that the team can compete and secure important results even without its biggest attacking star.
