Have you ever imagined a country that is smaller than UNILAG or even your estate in Enugu?

That country exists and its name is Vatican City.

Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. It is only 44 hectares. That is about 0.44 square kilometer. You can trek round the whole country in less than one hour.

Where is it?

Vatican City is inside Rome, the capital of Italy. Yes, a country inside another country. If you are in Rome, you can just walk inside Vatican City without even knowing you have entered another country.

Why is it a country then?

Even though it is very small, Vatican City is very powerful. It is the headquarters of the Catholic Church. The Pope lives there. He is the president of the country.

Vatican City has everything a normal country has:

  • It has its own flag and anthem

  • It has its own money - Euro

  • It has its own army called Swiss Guard. They wear colorful uniform

  • It has its own radio station and even number plate

  • It has its own passport

Population

Only about 800 people live inside Vatican City. Most of them are priests and Swiss Guards. Over 5 million people visit every year to see St. Peter's Basilica.

Interesting fact

Vatican City does not have hospital, airport or even prison inside. If you commit crime there, you will be taken to Italian prison. Also, it is the only country in the world that is listed as a whole as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

So next time you complain that Nigeria is small, remember Vatican City. A whole country wey no reach your village.
