The heart beats about 2.5 billion times in an average life, and millions of gallons of blood circulate to every part of the body. This constant flow takes in oxygen, fuel, hormones, other compounds, and many essential cells. It also removes metabolic waste. When the heart stops, the necessary functions fail, some almost immediately. Given the never-ending workload of the heart, it's surprising that it has performed very well, for so long, for so many people.
