China is making big headlines today, Monday October 19, 2026. If you follow China news, three major provinces are trending for different reasons - Guangdong, Beijing and Shanghai. Here is what is happening right now.

*1. GUANGDONG - Record Trade Boom Shocks The World*

Guangdong province, which is China's manufacturing hub and trade powerhouse, just posted a record foreign trade performance today. According to Guangzhou Customs data released this morning, Guangdong's trade value hit 3.23 trillion yuan (about $446 billion) in Q3 2026 alone - the first time ever it has crossed 3 trillion in a single quarter.

That is a 31.3% year-on-year growth compared to last year, and it marks the 13th consecutive quarter of growth. In September alone, trade hit 1.18 trillion yuan with 45.7% growth - the biggest monthly increase in 5 years.

The province now trades with over 160 countries. Trade with Belt and Road partners reached 3.2 trillion yuan and trade with APEC economies hit 5.74 trillion yuan. Exports of integrated circuits jumped 61.6% and industrial robots 26.6%. Shenzhen is set to host the APEC meeting in November, so more eyes will be on Guangdong.

In other Guangdong news, the Dubai Jewellery Group just signed a major MoU with the Gold Association of Guangdong to boost gold and jewellery trade between Dubai and China.

*2. BEIJING - Super-Aged City Warning and Economy Update*

In Beijing, the capital, two big stories are trending. First, Beijing Daily reported on Saturday that Beijing will become a "super-aged" city by 2035, with one in three residents aged 60 or above. As of end of 2025, Beijing already has 5.29 million residents aged 60+, which is almost one-quarter of its population. The government is now raising basic pensions and planning to spend about 180 billion yuan ($26.9 billion) this year to encourage births as China's population shrinks since 2022.

Second, China's economy data released today from Beijing shows GDP grew 4.5% in Q3 2026, slightly above the expected 4.4%, and better than Q2's 4.3%. Retail sales rose 1.1% in September and industrial production grew 5.5%. However, new home prices still fell, showing the property slump continues. The loan prime rate is expected to remain unchanged tomorrow at 3.00% and 3.50%.

*3. SHANGHAI - Stock Market Drop and Sports Victory*

Shanghai is trending for finance and sports. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.5% to 3,699 points today despite the strong GDP data, while Shenzhen dropped 0.9%. Over 3,800 stocks fell as investors moved to defensive sectors like banking. ICBC hit a record high and reclaimed top market cap.

In sports, Shanghai hosted a dramatic Masters final on Sunday. Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 to win the Shanghai Masters 1000 title - his biggest career title. In golf, home favourite Yin Ruoning won the LPGA Shanghai title at Sheshan Golf Club on Sunday with an 11-under-par finish, beating South Korea's Choi Hye-jin by one stroke.
