Tragedy has struck the National Youth Service Corps NYSC in Enugu State as a corps member reportedly died in the orientation camp on Monday October 20 2026.

The deceased identified as Etimbuk Daniel was serving in Enugu State and was said to have complained of illness while in camp. According to reports trending this morning in Nigeria, the young corps member was rushed to the camp clinic after showing signs of acute kidney injury and dehydration.

Officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC have waded into the matter to investigate claims that suspected fake drugs may have been administered. The agency in a statement on Monday said preliminary findings suggest the corps member may have taken unregistered drugs which led to complications.

The death has sparked outrage on social media especially on X and Facebook where Nigerians are calling for full investigation into medical facilities at NYSC orientation camps across the country. Many former corps members have shared their own experiences of poor medical care in camps.

Parents of the deceased have demanded justice and called on NYSC authorities to explain what really happened to their son. They said Etimbuk was healthy when he left home for camp and cannot understand how he died within days of resumption.

NYSC Enugu State Coordinator has not yet released official statement but sources inside the camp say all activities were briefly suspended on Monday morning to mourn the deceased. Other corps members were seen crying and praying at the parade ground.

This incident is coming at a time when NYSC is already under scrutiny over welfare of corps members. Just last month another corps member collapsed during morning parade in Kano camp due to alleged poor feeding and dehydration.

Health experts say NYSC camps need better equipped clinics with qualified doctors and genuine drugs. They advise corps members to always disclose their medical history and avoid self medication.

The Federal Government is expected to release statement later today. NAFDAC says it has sealed two patent medicine stores around Enugu camp area pending investigation.
