On July 28, 1945, a B-25 Mitchell crashed into the Empire State Building during heavy fog, causing destruction, fire, and loss of life. Among those caught in the disaster was Betty Lou Oliver, a young elevator operator who was severely injured in the explosion. While being evacuated, the elevator she was placed in plunged 75 floors after its cables snapped. Against all odds, a combination of coiled cables and compressed air cushioned the fall, allowing her to survive what remains the longest recorded elevator fall. After months of recovery, she went on to live a full life, her story standing as one of the most extraordinary examples of human survival, luck, and resilience.
