If you receive an SMS that says your bank account has been blocked or your BVN has been locked, do not click the link inside that message. Many Nigerians in Lagos and Abuja have lost their money this week because they clicked that link and entered their bank details.
The new scam is very simple. The scammers send you an SMS that looks like it is from GTB or Access Bank. The message will say something like Your account has been suspended due to suspicious activity, click here to verify. When you click the link, it will take you to a website that looks exactly like your bank website and ask you to enter your account number and PIN. Once you enter it, the scammers will use it to withdraw all your money.
To know if an SMS is fake, check the sender name. Real banks will never send you a link from a normal phone number like 0803 or 0901. Real bank SMS comes from a short name like GTBank or AccessBank. Also, real banks will never ask you to enter your PIN or OTP on a website.
If you receive a suspicious SMS, do not click it. Delete it immediately. If you are not sure, go directly to your bank app or call your bank customer care number that is on the back of your ATM card.
