India Bemuses Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan, Modi Cites ‘Decisive Progress’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered United States President Donald Trump’s newly released 20-point Gaza peace plan robust support, terming the move as a move towards “decisive progress” on finding a solution for one of the world’s longest-running conflicts. Modi, in his statement on Saturday, emphasized that India has always believed in a “durable and just peace” and embraced Trump’s leadership at this crucial time.

The Gaza crisis, which has seen recurrent escalations, humanitarian emergencies, and human causalities, saw urgent appeals for a breakthrough. Trump's proposal sees a comprehensive roadmap which it proposes towards ending the bloodshed and setting the stage for a long-term stable future. The essence of the plan sees it call for a seamless immediate ceasefire, unconditional release of all hostages within 72 hours, gradual Israeli troop disengagement, and the formation of a transitional governing mechanism with international supervision. Reconstruction, disarmament of militias, and prisoner swaps also feature within the outline.

Israel has provided tentative support for the plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed American mediation but imposed conditions, especially on maintaining security control and hammering out Hamas’s disarmament. Hamas, on its part, has provided conditional support, greeting the focus on a ceasefire and aid but raising concerns over comprehensive demilitarization and international governance. The Arab states, Turkey, and the European Parliament have overwhelmingly greeted the proposal, calling on both sides to take advantage of it.

In India, Modi’s declaration mirrors New Delhi’s long-standing diplomatic policy of endorsement of peace initiatives in West Asia with equal engagement with Israel and the Arab world. In giving Trump’s roadmap its approval, India gives a positive indication that it cares for global stability and human-centric priorities at a time when civilian deaths in Gaza have emerged as a global concern.

Experts note that the success for the plan will depend on Israel and Hamas exhibiting flexibility for compromise. Hurdles for execution entail maintaining terms for ceasefire, authenticating on-time release of hostages, and introducing effective governance for Gaza. The critic also notes that outside oversight will pose questions for Palestinian sovereignty with it.

But the blessing by Modi signifies the importance which is given by India towards settling conflicts with international coordination. As global powers decide on the sustainability of the scheme, the weeks ahead will decide whether the international push can be turned into long-term peace for Gaza.
