On June 22, 2025, the United States launched "Operation Midnight Hammer," a series of military strikes against three Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. President Donald Trump declared the damage "monumental," stating the US had "taken the bomb out of their hands" and that the hits were "hard and accurate." The operation involved B-2 stealth bombers deploying GBU-57 "bunker-buster" bombs and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Initial assessments from the US military and satellite imagery suggest "extremely severe damage and destruction" at all three sites, with visible craters and structural damage. However, the UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, has been more cautious, stating that while Fordow was "directly impacted," the "degree of damage inside the uranium enrichment halls can't be determined with certainty" due to its buried nature. The IAEA confirmed Natanz was "completely destroyed" and Isfahan sustained "very significant damage," but also reported no increase in off-site radiation levels. Adding to the uncertainty, a senior Iranian source claimed that most of the highly enriched uranium at Fordow had been moved before the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while praising the US strikes, hinted that Israel possesses "interesting intel" on the whereabouts of Iran's 60% enriched uranium, which is a significant step toward weapons-grade material. Iran has condemned the attacks as a "grave violation of international law" and vowed a "response," with its Parliament approving a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz (pending final approval). The international community, including the UN Secretary-General, has expressed "grave alarm" and called for de-escalation, while Russia condemned the strikes. The situation remains highly volatile, with fears of a wider regional conflict looming as the world awaits Iran's promised retaliation.
